Youth will change the system!
Hi All! Want to RSVP? Please get in touch about our waitlist (we're thinking it's likely you'll get on). RSVP here and we'll send you a link.
Join us for a coordinated day of action on Wednesday, October 23rd. Youth from care across BC will come together to learn about advocacy, meet directly with decision makers, and tell stories about our experiences in care in an effort to change the system.
Together, we'll board a bus from east Vancouver and take a ferry to Victoria. We will learn about advocacy, build connections with one another, and have real conversations about aging out. We will build solutions and help ensure no youth falls through the cracks.
We wish for all youth to access support after 19. And that's where you come in.
We're at a monumental time to achieve our ask. We're celebrating huge wins with the parliamentary finance committee, we're hearing rumours that MCFD is gearing to make our ask a reality. The thing that will change this is well-timed public policy advocacy. Politicians sit in fancy board rooms and make real decisions that impact us.
This is our chance to show government why the time has never been better.
What you can expect:
- A full day of travel from East Vancouver to the BC Parliament with chartered buses and ferry services.
- Food and travel covered by Fostering Change for the day.
- Fun, networking, and community building.
- A chance to meet other youth from care advocates and celebrate what we're capable of.
- The chance to meet with politicians and hear directly about how to change the system.
Please sign up by October 15!
Recently, we are celebrating a campaign win! The Parliamentary budget committee's unanimous recommendation of our ask was a feature of their 2020 Budget Consultation report. We were featured in pages 69 and 70 of the report and on the media release and executive summary. It mean's they're listening.
Last year, we met with dozens of MLAs and other key government officials. We spoke with top ministers across BC and communicated an effective call for change.
Policy Solutions Day 2018 was a huge success. 45 youth had over 25 meetings with policy professionals to change to policies that affect their lives daily. We submitted a policy memo, joined dozens of our siblings as we advocated for change, and brought journalists to cover the event. We wrote an open article in the Vancouver Sun and were covered by CBC and Victoria News. Check out this album on Facebook for photos of 2018.
This event is taking place on unceded territory in various communities. Some of us will travel from Coast Salish Vancouver (of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations) and travel to Victoria, the unceded traditional territory of the Lkwungen speaking peoples. This day is about fixing a system with overwhelming representation of Indigenous youth in care, and honouring our transitions out.
